Sending your child off to school is a traumatic experience for most parents. As excited as they are for the kids, there are always mixed feelings and a lot of anxiety. Setting kids up in their new rooms is just one of the projects on a long list of things to be done. Snacks and treats are always a crowd pleaser, but they are quickly gobbled up without adding any nutrition to your kid's college diet. Water bottles are good choices for care packages. You can get them big enough to hold enough coffee or flavored water to last through a morning of classes or an afternoon in the study lounge. The packaged meals are good for kids to have late at night or when they don't feel like walking to the cafeteria.

Most kids at school can use packages of socks and underwear. Sending new socks along with laundry detergent might be the incentive your kid needs to actually wash the socks.

You can also throw in some disinfecting wipes for grimy desktops and cabinets. An extra long cord on a charger will be helpful in rooms that don't have outlets on every wall. With the extra length, kids can have their phones right by them wherever they are in their rooms.

Things can get tense on campus, especially during finals. A basket filled with toys will make a good diversion between cram sessions. You can fill it up with small items like frisbees, paddles and balls, and an over the door basketball hoop complete with foam basketball. Squeeze toys and slinkies are good ideas for a kid with limited space and tests coming up.

Kids love decorating their rooms and will appreciate some simple holiday decorations to make those rooms more like home. You can send garlands, candy canes, and strings of lights. You should find out what the house policy is on any electric lights however. Diffusers will help remove unwanted odors in stuffy rooms.

Kids look forward to care packages when they're away at school. It doesn't really matter what's in them. Opening the package and checking out the contents will remind them you are not so far away.
