Try Shroom Burgers At Home

By Daniel Olson

When it comes to regional dishes, it is common to want to take something home and share with others. However, most people may not know where to start, especially if a recipe is fairly new or proprietary. For those who are naturally born cooks, cracking the food code is easy and sometimes the end result tastes better than the original. Trendy foods like buffalo wings, fried chicken sandwiches, and shroom burgers have many spins created by home cooks.

There are many burger recipes to be found online and though some people may think this is another sauteed fungi sandwich with a beef or turkey patty, they are mistaken. The star of this experience is a Portobello mushroom that has been covered with breading and panko crumbs, then fried to a golden crisp. Inside is a nice blend of onions, cheeses, and herbs.

The other rave factor is the burger sauce. While there seems to be a universal recipe to be found online, this one also has dried dill with a little lemon juice. Although the original burger calls for a potato bun, white or wheat bread will suffice.

For those who do not care much about cooking, this could be a nice project to share with other members of a family. One person can do the cutting, while the other is in charge of the cooking and preparation process. If unsure about the steps, there are likely to be online demonstration videos that can walk culinary novices through the process.

When cooking for guests, it helps to have a variety of foods handy. Yet, most people who are busy working while tending to other obligations find that getting acquainted with their kitchen is low on the list of priorities. This is common but there are some surefire ways to make restaurant style classics in little time.

Other vegetables, as well as a cheese with less fat content, can be added to the filling. Mushroom stems can be chopped, as well as cooked purple potatoes or squash. Smoked mozzarella and provolone are not only flavorful but are lower in cholesterol and calories. Another way to cut out the bad stuff would be to use yogurt instead of cheese as a filler but sprinkle a few shreds of preferred cheese on top.

While some consider potato buns to be better on the nutrition scale than most white or wheat versions, this can be treated like any other burger. Instead of using a few small lettuce leaves, wrapping in several large pieces of Romaine or iceberg lettuce is a healthy start. Whole wheat flatbread or tortillas are also good for making wraps or a purse style sandwich.

When making these at home, try to have fun with it. Perhaps add a little fresh garlic or sweet onion pieces to the filling, or mix in Italian bread crumbs with the panko mixture. Sometimes flavored oil blends can give it an extra layer of flavor with hints of hot pepper, rosemary, or sage.
