Surprise Party Guests With Baklava

By Essie Osborn

Social events of all types should be about the people but some feel it is about the entertainment or the food that is served. The event could be related to work or just a simple gathering of friends and family but ensuring that the day will bring a surprise or two is priority as far as the person planning the event is concerned. Treats like baklava are one of those things that are certain to turn heads as it is considered an international pastry.

This dessert originates from Greece though there are many recipes that are claimed by other countries, including the United States. Inside are a variety of nuts, and maybe dried fruits layered between phyllo dough sheets covered in butter and honey or syrup. Once baked, this crunchy goodness stands on its own as being a dessert that is hard to put down. It may also be served at casual gatherings.

While there are many recipes for this Greek dish, some may find that their local bakery has these in many flavors, such as hazelnut, pistachio, and walnut. Some bakeries use dried fruits like dates along with an abundance of spices that include cinnamon, clove, and vanilla. These treats would not have their sticky consistency without the use of real honey or sugar syrup.

Attendees may find another popular dish that is not exactly new but now, there are many unique spins on this classic that are easy for anyone to make. Not only are meatballs economical and fun, but they are no longer limited to pasta dishes and sandwiches. There are now recipes that use other meats besides beef or pork.

Not long ago, turkey meatballs topped with teriyaki sauce and pineapple chunks were popular at parties. However, there is a Greek recipe that complements this type of dessert and is easy to make. With the use of herbs and spices such as cilantro, jalapeno, and mint mixed into the ground meat mixture. While many of these recipes use lamb or veal, something low in fat like turkey will do also.

Other appetizers may be considered such as prosciutto skewers or spinach squares. Many recipes found on Greek cooking websites can trigger a number of ideas that are simple to make as well as economical. Leftover phyllo dough may be used to make cheese turnovers for those guests that do not eat meat.

Planning an event can be challenge when it comes to being predictable or adding in that wow factor. Anyone with the responsibility of planning this may want to consider some things, such as what are guests used to in terms of meals and preparation. A happy medium is to combine the traditional with exotic cuisine and go with a place that prides itself on great service.

However, most people will be there to enjoy themselves, as everything at the serving table should be fun and flavorful. Although it is near impossible to please everyone, anything with a nice arrangement should be enough to pique the curiosity of the hungry guest. These are just some of the things to think about when planning a social event.
