Guidelines For Buying Commercial Grade Refrigerators With Energystar Operating Efficiency

By Cindy H. Cassidy

Buying commercial refrigerators for use in the food industry calls for somewhat different considerations than shopping for standard household appliances does. It makes sense for business owners to choose commercial grade refrigerators with EnergyStar ratings that will run more affordably and also do less harm to the environment.

When a consumer sees the Energy Star label affixed to an appliance, this indicates that it has passed the necessary requirements for it to have this designation and that it will consume less energy and produce a reduced amount of greenhouse gases. One can expect that these models will typically be around 40 percent more efficient in their energy consumption as they have certain features which facilitate this.

Before an appliance can be designated an Energy Star product it must meet some specific criteria. It should be designed to cut energy costs within a set period of time and be able to do so through the implementation of non-proprietary technology that is available to all manufacturers, and this efficiency needs to be measurable.

The business owner must determine which type of fridge will be most closely suited to their needs. Different designs are built to accommodate various types of food and beverages in terms of shape, and size of compartments inside them and they also have varying kinds of doors. Besides the level of energy efficiency a refrigerator offers it's also advisable to take these factors into consideration as well.

Industrial fridge designs are made to store many different types of food and beverages and their inside compartments reflect these variations, as do the types of doors they have. Energy efficiency should definitely be a top priority, but so should these other important aspects.

Where the refrigerator's compressor is located is another feature to be considered. This is the component which keeps the fridge cold, and it may be mounted on the bottom or the top of the unit. The former are normally less expensive and do not last as long because of their design, but allow for easier cleaning and more space. The latter typically cost more, but the compressor is more durable, providing more years of use.

The size of the refrigerator is also something that must be evaluated before purchasing. It needs to fit within the available space, and also within the price limit of the business. While as a rule, larger refrigerators consume more energy, those with an Energy Star label will generally still perform efficiently.
