Thousands of beers are now sold in bars and clubs and there are many different varieties to be tasted. The first decision to be made is what type of beers you want to make. Everything can be brewed in the home from dark beers, lagers and cider. Wheat beers have become very popular in recent years and these are also now available to the home brewer.

After deciding on your style and strength of beer there are two ways that you can get your brew on the go. Brewing kits are a popular choice for beginners and are a fairly easy way of producing a batch of beer. More experienced brewers may choose to buy separate ingredients such as hops and malts to create a brew made to their own special recipe.

Before you start your beer making you will need some basic equipment and tools to get your first batch of ale going. A brewing vat or barrel will be needed to place all of the required ingredients in and start fermenting. Tubing, bottles, labels and cleaning tools to sterilize your equipment will also need to be purchased.

One of the best places to source your equipment and ingredients is from a home brewing store in your area. They will stock everything you need to get started and will be happy to advise you on what you should be buying. Due to their many years of experience they will also be on hand with helpful tips and will answer any questions you may have.

An alternative to a store is to purchase your supplies from an internet based brewing company. These sites have huge stocks of ingredients, kits and equipment. They may also have other items that can help you such as books, videos and popular recipe ideas which can be downloaded. Many sites will also have forums where you can chat with fellow brewers and share hints and recipes with other amateur brewers.

Home brew clubs are another great place to seek advice if you are just starting the hobby. Members of these clubs will give lessons on brewing and as a member you may get discount from some suppliers. Beer festivals are sometimes staged to allow amateur brewers to share their creations with other club members. These organizations are a great place to chat and exchange ideas and techniques with other like minded hobbyists.

A very important thing to think about is hygiene and safe practices. All of your brewing equipment and tools need to be sterilized before and after use as the slightest bacteria will damage your batch. If you are using bottles for your beer some care should be taken due to the very high pressure of the liquid while it is still fermenting.
