Will You Earn Good Pay After Culinary School?

By Wanda Northwood

If you visit a culinary school, you will often hear of the representative telling you how great their school is. They will often tell you that the average chef earns over $50,000 per year and many chefs earn over $100,000. However, is this true? It is true that many chefs earn well over $100,000 a year. However, in order to get to this level, you must be an experienced chef with a good understanding of food and serving. In order to learn how to serve food properly, a person must have an education in what they are doing. Most chefs today need to have culinary school education. School can teach you a lot about the culinary world and management.

Most students coming out of culinary school claim to get entry level positions. They are not graduating and getting jobs as sous chefs and head chefs. Their pay is often close to minimum wage and under 14.00 an hour. Is it worth it to get a culinary school education if you cannot find a good job after graduation? This is a question that a lot of potential students are asking themselves. A lot of students today are choosing to avoid culinary school and choosing to work as an apprentice in a restaurant. This is often the cheapest and best way to go.

Culinary school can offer you a good way to learn about food. Schools like the Culinary Institute of America have great culinary programs. The students that graduate from there often go on to having good jobs and spots on television. The CIA is known for its culinary expertise and fancy catering. Students with a 4 year bachelor's degree can often land top jobs in only a couple of years out of school. This means that employers are impressed with a graduate from this school. However, not everyone can get accepted into the CIA. Most people cannot afford the tuition. It is considered the Harvard Education of the culinary field.

If you cannot get into the CIA, would another program be appropriate for you? In my opinion, culinary school is a good way to spend your money. Without a good education today in food, it is extremely hard to land jobs in well-established restaurants. Many successful restaurants in Manhattan and Chicago spend over $1,000,000 building the right food establishment. They often want to see experience, culinary education and a good track record. You will be serving well over 50 guess an hour in well-established places. Business owners demand that you know what you are doing.

The feeling of accomplishment also works well with school. Many students that have a culinary education say that they feel more secure when applying for a job. They have something to offer that many other cooks do not have. If you say that you graduated from an Ivy League cooking school, your interviewer will often be impressed. Certain schools mean success to an employer. It is important to feel comfortable with your cooking skills not matter what. Education is not for everyone, but those that choose it often do well.
