The Important Things To Know Regarding Transgenic Crops Transgene

By Jason Long

A transgenic plant generally contains genes or DNA that plant breeders have inserted in it rather than that plant acquiring it genes normally via pollination. This inserted gene is sometimes called transgene. Due to the advancement in technology, genes can today be collected from any plant or species which does not necessary have to be related to recipient plant. Transgenic crops transgene is today a technology that is being slowly accepted by many countries.

Originally, no crop was domesticated, they were all wild and scientist later domesticated them through genetic modification. The plants are made with some engineered material with a sole goal of enhancing or improving the original organism. GMO seeds are today being used to generate better corn, soybeans as well as cotton.

A plant breeder aims at assembling combination of genes from other crops in a certain crop to make the plant much stronger and more resistant to diseases and insects. GMOs are also known to be very productive. The genes are inserted on a particular plant depending on where the plant grows and the purpose of that plant. If a crop is grown on a place that has inadequate rainfall, then it can be injected with drought resistance genes.

Other desirable features may include pest resistance, reduced maturity period, disease resistance, cold tolerance, heat tolerance and drought tolerance. It is quite difficult to combine the best genes simply in one plant. The process of doing so is quite long and difficult. For traditional plants, the scope of transgenic is limited to only plants of the same species or only related species.

For traditional plants or crops, the scope of transgenic basically is limited to plants of same species only or plants considered related. For example, it can be difficult or even impossible to transfer some soybean protein genes to a plant that is completely different like a corn. But today, transgenic technology has made it very possible for breeders to generally collect and bring together several vital genes to one plant.

These crops will also require less machine hours hence reducing the amount of carbon dioxide that would have been emitted to the environment. There is less emission of gas from greenhouse which is also a benefit. Since farmers will not require any insecticides they can then save their money instead of buying these chemicals. Some people even think that GMO foods actually taste better and are of good quality.

Engineering is known to remove seeds and also produce longer shelf life hence facilitating safe transit of yields to some countries that may not have such foods full of nutrition. GMO is considered environmental friendly since it uses less very little chemical, less machinery and also less time.

GMO foods may sometimes have minerals and vitamins added to them via genetic modification simply to offer greater nutritive benefits. These GMOs also have some cons. There might be some environmental damage sustained as a result growing plants in some environmental conditions that generally would not support such plants.

Another advantage is the fact that farmers will save their money. GMO plants do not need any spraying either bacterial insecticide or any other chemical hence saving money. But the food from the crop is considered to be allergic to children.
