Scoliosis Prevention Tips And Importance

By Carl Sullivan

Curvature of the spinal cord is often called scoliosis by medical practitioners. Although the spine is meant to be straight, it appears to be bent in some people who find it difficult to stand without bending. With proper awareness, people can take scoliosis prevention tips more seriously so as to avoid this ugly phenomenon. Maybe a better understanding of the causes and cure of curved spine will convince more people to take precaution.

The causes of this problem vary. In infants, it can be caused as a result of bone abnormality during child-bearing. Scoliosis in children is not usually a problem because the condition tends to correct itself as the child grows older.

There is another type known as neuromuscular scoliosis. You might have seen such cases among people who are not able to walk properly because their sense of balance and body coordination is either lost or impaired. This is often caused by problems such as cerebral palsy (damage to the brain), paralysis and spina bifida. Sometimes, the child is not to blame for this because the brain damage might have occurred during the developmental stages in the womb.

Again, one may consider looking at the degenerative and idiopathic cases. While the degenerative case can be linked to serious damage to the spinal cord, the idiopathic case does not have any known cause for now; this is why many people think that it may be transferable from parents to offspring. Back surgery and osteoporosis are other factors that can lead to having the degenerative type.

There is no type of spine curvature that is easy to handle. You may notice some awkward behavior among people who have this condition especially when they are mandated to stand out in a crowd. If they are asked to deliver a lecture or address an audience, you could see how uneasy they are throughout the function.

Some of the symptoms of a curved spinal cord include uneven shoulders, uneven waist, uneven hips and unequal development of the shoulder blades. If things get worse, the sufferer may also have his spine twisted and the ribs may also tilt in the direction of the twisted spine. This makes it even more necessary to seek measures for preventing the condition as soon as possible.

One of the most important steps to take is to seek the advice of a medical doctor. The first step that will be taken is performing some diagnostic tests such as taking an x-ray. When an x-ray is done and it is discovered that the teenager may have a curved spine, the doctor may suggest the use of back brace. Braces are able to correct growing spines if worn for at least 16 hours per day for some months or years. Children with curved spines can hasten their treatment by wearing braces.

Failure to treat this condition as soon as the symptoms begin to manifest can lead to more complications such as paralysis, chronic pain and nerve damage. Children with back pain do not find it funny especially in school when they see their mates sit comfortably for hours receiving lectures and studying privately. It may also be an avenue for infection and bleeding when the spinal cord shifts out of its position.
