Do Small Carb Diets Work? Will You Lose Weight On Low Carb Bagels?

By Gregory Jones

Most restaurants including fast food franchises now provide several menu options for folks on low carbohydrate diets. However, a review of the nutrition facts does beg the question - Do low carbohydrate diets work? Every morning on my way to work, I grab my coffee and bagel at a popular coffee and donut franchise. Generally, I order the plain bagel with regular cream cheese, however being heavily influenced by my neighbor who thrives on low carbohydrate diets, I decided to try their low carb bagels instead.

Start Small- One common mistake people make is taking on too much, too quickly. While diving in the deep end shows strong motivation, it's a lot like sprinting at the start of a marathon, and can ultimately lead to frustration and returning to old habits.

Instead, try to focus on making a few positive changes gradually, so you can experiment with what works best for you. If you try to burden yourself all at once by telling yourself you "can't have" certain foods, that will generally lead to greater desires and cravings for those "forbidden" foods. By taking small steps over a period of time, you can comfortably adopt a low carbohydrate diet plan that is sustainable for your long-term health.

Remove Bad Foods- Begin by having a look at the food in your kitchen, including the snacks, cooking products, and groceries that you buy on a weekly basis. The first step is to start removing items that contain high levels of simple carbohydrates and sugars, which should be reduced in your weekly diet. As creatures of habit, we tend to do what is convenient, and that includes eating things that are nearby.

Several studies have shown that little carbohydrate diets do not work for the long term since they are much too strict and hence not sustainable for most ordinary people. In fact, if such little carbohydrate diets are followed blindly without consideration to the higher fat and cholesterol as in the case if the lower carbohydrate bagel example, it may, in fact, be downright dangerous to your health long term.

People should not be on the Scarsdale Little Carb diet for over 14 days without talking to their doctor first. If a person starts this diet when having health conditions, then they need to make sure that their doctor says it's alright for them to be on it.

After following such a simple plan and having fun eating and yet losing pounds I still frequent the coffee and donut place. However, I have now switched to the plain bagel but with reduced fat-lightly spread cream cheese. No lower carbohydrate bagel for me, please! But no more heavily spread regular cream cheese either! It's all about the eating the right foods and the right calories with the right exercises that keep the pounds away!

Focus on Your Habits- Habit is an extremely powerful driving force behind human behavior. For better success on a little carb diet plan, take a close look at any habits that may be preventing you from eating well (make a list). Then, start with just a single habit (maybe it's that bagel you get from the deli every morning on the way to the office), and find a way to replace that habit with a healthier one (like making a green smoothie for your walk instead). Once that habit has been substituted, repeat the process.
