Tips For Making Vegan Holiday Recipes

By Larry Allen

The holidays are a time for families to get together to love, fun, and good meals with each other. For people who are vegans, however, this time of year can pose a unique challenge to what they can and cannot eat. When you want to include everyone in the merriment, you might wonder what you can cook or prepare so the vegans in your family do not feel left out. These vegan holiday recipes are relatively simple to prepare and can be served at any Christmas, Thanksgiving, or Easter meal to your family.

Holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas take place during a time of year when pumpkins, acorn squashes, and spaghetti squashes come into season. The plentiful harvest of this type of produce means they are sold for very low prices. Further, they are entirely meat-free, which means vegans and vegetarians can eat them at any meal. As you get ready to cook, you could purchase several to include in your meal.

Further, they may be prepared in a number of different ways. The simplest way to cook them involves baking them in the oven. You have to slice them open, remove the insides and seeds, and then salt and pepper them. Instead of using real butter, you can add margarine or vegetarian butter that does not have any animal products in it.

When the flesh is soft, you may then scoop it out into a dish and mash it like you would potatoes. Another way to serve them is to slice the flesh thinly and then add more margarine or oil to it. Squash can be a side item or a main dish.

Another option is to go out and buy several large portabella mushrooms. These types of mushrooms are about the size of a baseball and very meaty. They also are sold year round and do not cost a lot of money. Preparing them calls for you to turn them over and remove the stem. You then should brush the inside of the cup to remove any debris before oiling and seasoning the mushrooms to be baked.

To make them, you remove the stem and debris inside of the mushrooms. You then can top them with olive oil, salt, and pepper. You might then bake or roast them as you would meat like turkey or chicken. You then can slice them into strips or serve them whole, whichever you and the vegans in the group prefer.

Finally, you have the option of serving a meat replacement called tofurkey. Tofurkey is made from tofu and is shaped to look like a turkey. However, there is no meat in this dish. Tofurkey is ideal for roasting or frying. It has a texture that is similar to meat. You could add seasonings like onion, salt, pepper, sage, and others to make it more palatable and also to infuse some of the seasonal flavors that come with the holidays.

By incorporating these tips into your holiday mealtime prep, you can satisfy the appetites of meat eaters and vegans alike. A vegan friendly meal can be relatively easy to pull off when you take advantage of the resources available to you at the grocery store. Many of these options are also affordable and do not cost much to buy.
