People Who Love Spicy Food Say The Best Dessert Is A Jamaican Fruit Cake

By Michael Wagner

Some people who work in an office dread office parties, not because they hate to share but not knowing what to bring. Although it may make sense to buy something from a fast food restaurant, a supervisor or office manager may encourage bringing something that is homemade. While not everyone has culinary skills, it may be helpful to visit a place that serves international edibles. Often, desserts are a good call, like baklava, flan, or Jamaican fruit cake are good ways to go.

While spicy food lovers may either be too full or overwhelmed by the heat in their dishes, they may think that there is no room for any kind of dessert. Others may believe that sweets may get lost in the lingering flavor profile because no one wants to consume empty calories. However, a good fruitcake will hold its own against many spicy dishes.

Making this cake at home is fairly easy and it is also easy to control the alcohol content if needed. Some bakers use natural rum flavor when serving to mixed groups or young people. While some credit the rum for the moist texture, there are many substitutes that can be added instead.

If using alcohol is a no, the spices should be the main focus. Ground spices are okay to use as long as a noticeable scent is present while still in the container. Although some recipes will result in a medium brown to a coffee bean colored concoction, it helps to know that adding molasses to the batter will give it a richer color.

One item that is becoming a hit in social settings is black cake, also known as a holiday fruitcake. At first sight, it might look like plain chocolate but this is actually a dark spice confection filled with fruit soaked in brandy or rum. While there is no set recipe, as some may call for a white vanilla icing, spices include cinnamon, nutmeg, and pumpkin spice.

Anyone serving this for a potluck at the office should use caution. This goes for whether they are buying from a restaurant or making their own version at home. The reason is that a small amount, perhaps a shot glass full just to taste, is enough for younger people. There are also rum flavored extracts for those who do not consume alcohol at all.

Due to its potency, most places will specify what type of alcohol is used. If contributing to an office potluck, it may be wise to gauge how this dessert will be received. As some offices will hold a social gathering near the end of a work week, getting a little tipsy on the job may be acceptable.

Serving food that reminds people of a tranquil paradise is always a big hit at social gatherings. It does not necessarily have to be spicy but entrees that have a little kick with a fruity or tangy aftertaste remind most of the island dishes that are becoming popular with many foodies. As with any good meal, there is always room for dessert.
