What's So Special About Organic Beef And Pork

By Scott Wood

There are many differing opinions on how much meat people should have in their diets, and whether they should have any at all. Many will argue that only white meats, such as fish, chicken, and certain seafood are safe to eat. There are others who love red meat and have no plans to give it up. For these people, choosing between non-organic and organic beef and pork should be quick and easy once the facts are presented.

Instead of burying your head in the sand, you need to do some research into what all can be added to the meat you eat. It is within the regulations set down by the FDA to inject hogs and cattle with a sodium, salt, water solution. Producers do this is to make the livestock heavier. It increases the fat content which tenderizes and adds to the shelf life of meat.

Hydrolyzed proteins are injected into livestock to tenderize the meat as well. These proteins contain MSG, but the distributors are not required to list that on their labels. Organics do not have any additives.

Almost all grain fed livestock is raised in huge storage facilities called concentrated animal feeding operations. They crowd as many animals as possible into these places and then inject them with antibiotics every day regardless of their health. They have to do this in order to prevent disease from wiping out the whole herd. Grass fed livestock are healthier and have strong immune systems. If an animal gets sick, it is removed from the population.

The FDA allows producers to inject livestock with six different types of hormones. Three of these are synthetic and the other three are natural. If you eat meat that is not organic, you are ingesting one of more of these hormones. Many believe the hormones are responsible for reproductive problems in humans and want the use of them to be halted until more research is done.

Organics contain much higher levels of conjugated linoleic acid, CLA, than CAFO animals. In fact they can have as much as fifty percent more CLA than animals that are grain fed. CLA is an antioxidant that can help prevent cancer. Levels of Omega 3 are much higher in animals raised in pastures. Omega 3s are important for heart health and cancer prevention.

Grain fed animals, on the other hand, have much higher levels of Omega 6 which is known to adversely affect humans. It can increase the risks of stroke, osteoporosis, depression, and heart attacks. The Omega 6 levels are so high in these animals because of the combination of starch and acidic ph solution that is created by the grain and corn diets they are fed.

It is not realistic to believe that what animals eat won't affect you when you eat them. Meat that is full of Omega 6s, additives, hormones, and antibiotics, is going to affect the diner. You can not trust that cooking pork or beef to a certain temperature will destroy everything but the meat.
