How To Choose The Best Brewery Sanitizer

By Dominique Martin

Sanitized equipment are the only way to produce clean, tasty and quality beer. This is a fact even when you are using grains, malt or combining several ingredients. Equipment that are not sanitized will introduce a foreign taste, odor and reduce the quality. The right choice on brewery sanitizer must be made if high quality is to be achieved and maintained.

Bleach is a common option in many homes because of the ease with which you find it and the cost. The amount required to sanitize all your equipment is very small. Its strength makes it ideal for cleaning different types of equipment. It, however, requires thorough rinsing which means the use of water. This is likely to restore the impurities you were trying to eliminate.

Bleaches will require sterile water to rinse off containers. This is an added expense in your brewing process. The strength of bleaches makes them harmful to the skin, cloths and the eyes. The presence of bleach in your beer will significantly alter its taste. It requires a lot of work to completely sanitize your equipment.

One-Step- it comes with most brewing starter kits and is oxygen based. One-step is preferred because it does not require rinsing after use. It has been struck off the list of FDA approved sanitizers and is therefore a risk. Its strength makes it a secondary choice for many brewers.

Iodophor- its effectiveness raises its profile among other sanitizers. Online shops and brewery stores in neighborhoods supply iodophor in varying quantities. It has an incredibly short contact time because of its iodine base but its ability to stain plastic containers and cloths after prolonged use make it undesirable. Iodophor also leaves a strong odor on cloths and equipment.

Star Sun- it has a foaming effect that ensures that it gets into cracks and crevices. The sanitizer is considered as an acid rinse and is available from home brew stores and online shops. It is both colorless and odorless with a very little amount going a long way. You can still use it as long as the PH remains below 3.

The undoing about Star Sun is the fact that you will be left with a very dry skin and hands. The fact that it foams makes some brewers uncomfortable. The surface also remains slippery but this is likely to be attributed to poor rinsing procedures. It is considered among the best sanitizers available.

The best way to use Star Sun is to place it in a squirt bottle. This allows you to use it sparingly and therefore clean more equipment. By mixing it with reverse osmosis or distilled water, you have a chance to reuse the same solution on other equipment then discarding it.

Sanitizing aims at reducing bacterial concentration on your equipment. This allows the beneficial organisms in yeast to take full charge of fermentation. Yeast has the power to dominate the process once fermentation begins. The equipment called autoclave is used for complete sterilization. The autoclave is mainly found in laboratories. The other home based option is boiling your equipment for around twenty minutes.
