They are made from the fruit of cacao tree which is crushed in order to make an unsweetened chocolate. When they are crushed, there remains a fatty substance called the cocoa butter and a solid one called cocoa powder after being ground. The scientific name of the tree translates roughly to food of the gods.

Around forty or fifty million people depend on harvesting and manufacturing them as a source of their livelihood. The chocolate bars are labeled with the percentage indicating the total content it has of cacao solid. Although white variants does not contain cacao solids but they should instead contain cocoa butter to be considered as chocolate.

Chocolates are among the most popular items people like to give as presents to the persons they love specially on Valentines days. Millions are sold on this special day specifically those being packaged inside heart shaped boxes. Here are some things you need to know in purchasing good quality ones in having gift that is perfect.

Check the ingredients and see if cocoa is listed on the top and avoid those that have ingredients which are hard to pronounce. See also when it was made and the more recent and fresher ones will obviously have better quality. Different types of chocolates have different longevity until it is not advisable for them to be used.

They should also smell like a chocolate and nothing else because they absorb the odor of their surrounding environment which means it might have not been stored properly. Having no smell is also not good because it indicates old age or poor quality. Their surface must be glossy and consistent without any blemishes to be seen.

After buying, you could test them further by breaking them and the good ones will have a snapping sound. Vanilla and white chocolates have high sugar and milk content which makes them tend to bend and not snap when tested. And the final test would be tasting them because everyone has different preferences although the goods ones melt inside the mouth immediately.

They are also a healthy food which have antioxidants that fights off free radicals and the diseases they bring along. Avoid buying those that are labeled as dutched because this alkalizing process reduces the compounds that are healthy for the heart. It is not important where the ingredient originally came from because it does not affect the quality and taste greatly.
