A vegan diet is comprised of fare that is devoid of animal products of any kind. Although its definition is simplistic, due to the limited choices available to participants such plans are sometimes challenging and impractical to follow. This is due to the fact that several different eating programs fall under this classification. There is a wide range of different vegan diets and similar eating plans. A person can decide to follow such a diet in order to lose weight, or simply for personal reasons. This type of diet is much more restrictive than the traditional vegetarian eating program where participants merely avoid meat, chicken, and fish. Eating programs of this kind are also naturally low in fat, as the latter usually comes from meats and dairy products.

Consuming high amounts of fresh produce and nuts has been proven to cleanse one's body of harmful substances and toxins. This is an additional benefit linked to the aforementioned diet. Certain people, however, experience side effects from such plans, including digestive issues such as diarrhea and stomach cramps.

In years gone by, those who feel such diets are dangerous cite a lack of protein. Protein deficiency can lead to numerous health problems. Other experts, however, state that people can maintain their protein levels simply by planning their meals wisely when following this type of diet. Some scientists believe that the amount of protein required by most human beings can be obtained solely from plant proteins. However, it is essential to ensure that any diet one follows contains a broad range of nutritional elements so that the dieter will not suffer from deficiencies.
