What To Know About The Pizza

By Amanda Bean

Pizza is the name for the flat, round, oven-based bread that is usually topped with tomato sauce, cheese and other ingredients. The modern version originated in an area of Italy and has become extremely popular in other regions. Pizzeria refers to places that make and sell pizzas. There are so many cooking and recipe options with this dish.

This dish can be cooked in many different kinds of ovens and there are numerous ingredients that may be included as topping. This can be served hot or warm. Variations of the dish include stromboli and calzone.

The word itself comes from a Latin verb meaning to press and from a Greek word defined as solid. The dish, as we know it today, originated as the Neapolitan flatbread in Naples, Italy. Still, there are some urban legends that the Pizza Margherita came to be in 1889 when Neopolitan pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito was commissioned to make this for Queen Margherita.

At restaurants, the dish can be baked using one of the many different oven styles, including: electric deck oven, wood-fired brick, stone-brick, conveyor belt, and coal-fired brick. Less of these options are available for those cooking from home. In these cases, the dish is usually put on a stone and baked in a standard oven. Another cooking option is grilling it. This can be done on a barbecue grill. Both Chicago and Greek styles employ pans rather than placing it on the oven bricks directly.

The bottom portion of the pizza is called the crust. This may vary in many ways, particularly in its thickness and overall style. The thin kind is usually the result of hand tossing the dough. There is also the thick or Roman style, which is typical of Chicago or pan-style dishes. Usually the crust is left plain, but it can be filled with cheeses, or seasoned with garlic and herbs.

Originally these would only include mozzarella as the cheese. It was of the highest quality, produced in the areas around Naples. Other kinds of cheese can, and are, added today. Processed cheeses are often used for mass-market production, providing the most preferable qualities when it comes to browning, moisture content, fat and stretchiness, and melting. Scamorza, ricotta, pecorino romano and provolone are just some examples of cheeses used with this dish.

A plethora of options are available when it comes to toppings. Some individuals prefer this dish plain, with only cheese and sauce. These are often the people who say a good pizza does not need all of the extra ingredients. Others like to include multiple toppings to give the pizza more flavor and pizazz. Typical ingredients include various fruits, meats and vegetable, for instance: peppers, onions, bacon, ground beef, spinach, artichoke, mushrooms, ham, pineapple, tomato, anchovies and olives.

There are so many options when it comes to the popular dish pizza. This food item is believed to have originated in Italy but has become a beloved recipe in many parts of the world. There are numerous toppings, cheeses, sauces and crusts available. Furthermore, there are different styles and variations available from place to place. The main components of this recipe include dough, some form of tomato sauce and cheese.
