Kahlua Drinks From Mexico

By Paul Fox

Kahlua is a liqueur flavored with coffee, with rum as a the base. Kahlua drinks usually include ingredients like vanilla bean flavoring, sugar, and corn syrup. Historically, the drink was produced in 1936 and has grown to become Pernod Recard, the globe's largest alcoholic beverage distributor.

After the beans have been handpicked they are processed in order to extract what we know as the coffee beans. The coffee beans are then dried, after which the husk is taken off. The coffee beans are then placed in burlap bags so that they age to perfection which gives us the great flavor that we love. The beans are then roasted.

The sugarcane stalks are ground in order to obtain the juice which is boiled until it becomes a molasses. Then water and yeast are added to the molasses in order for it to ferment. The fermentation is what creates the alcohol. Then the mixture goes through a distillation process until the sugar is converted into alcohol. The alcohol which comes from the sugarcane is kept in barrels.

After seven years both the sugarcane and the coffee is taken to the distillery where the coffee gets turned into an extract. The extract is mixed with the sugarcane mixture, caramel and vanilla is added. Then it is left for two months before it is bottled and filtered. All of this is done before you can go to the liquor store and buy the liqueur to make those great tasting drinks.

The ingredients that make up kahlua, such as sugar cane and coffee beans, are processed in a special way. They grow in the shade and are picked by hand. After picking, the coffee pods are broken down to extract the inner beans, which are then dried and husked. This means the outer, thin shell layer is removed. The coffee is then dried in large bags made from the same fabric ans feed sacks. The beans are then roasted to perfection.

The alcohol present in drinks with Kahlua can help to lower fat metabolism, despite the fact that Kahlua contains no calories originating from fat. Most of the fat consumed is converted into acetate by the liver, although a small amount is converted into fat. In general, all the flavors of Kahlua mixed drinks contain between 11 and 11.5 carbohydrate grams per each ounce, most of these coming from the sugarcane and other flavorings added to the drink.

Typically, Kahlua is left to age in the barrels for two months, before being bottled, filtered, and packaged for resale. Several flavors of the liqueur are available in liquor stores and on grocery store shelves. Hazelnut, peppermint mocha, French vanilla, Especial, Standard, Mocha, and ready to serve are the varieties we can expect to see in stores. The flavored varieties can contain up to twice as many calories as the Especial and Standard versions, which have about 53 calories per one ounce serving.

The majority of the calories in Kahlua come from carbohydrates. Even though Kahlua is great tasting if you are on a diet you may want to monitor your intake of drinks made with Kahlua as they make it hard to slim down.
