Lilikoi Jelly - The Newest Flavor On The Block

By Stella Gay

Hawaii has always been known as the land of exotic plants, fruits, and tastes. The same can be said of products grown and sold on the islands. For anyone with a sweet tooth, they would agree that jams and jellies are a wonderful way to spice up any meal. Now pair this with a little known Hawaiian fruit, and you end up with a product known as lilikoi jelly.

You are probably asking yourself what exactly is lilikoi; after all its not a mainstream fruit. Well, you are right. This fruit grows predominantly on the islands of Hawaii, and can be considered a tropical fruit as it needs high moisture content, warm temperatures, and fertile ground. This uncommon fruit does not look like something you would normally eat as it possesses yellow cratered skin and tends to be a small in size. Inside it has a creamy yellow skin with dark seeds.

Many people do not eat this fruit raw for one reason, it is extreme in taste. Lilikoi is the perfect example of two extremes living side by side as it is very tart and will make your lips pucker while being equally as sweet at the same time. There are some daring souls who will eat this fruit raw, but most people enjoy it cooked in desserts or made into a condiment.

What many do not expect is the health benefits of eating lilikoi. It provides individuals with nearly half of the daily recommendation of vitamin C, and twenty five percent of vitamin A. As an added benefit, this fruit packs in ten grams of soluble fiber. This is a healthy addition to most dessert recipes. Due to a high sugar content, the fruit is ideal for jelly making.

This fruit is easily added to any dish as a substitute for traditional flavors, on a sandwich, or eaten right out of the jar. There are not many recipes available for this jelly at the moment, but that just means people can enjoy experimenting with this unique flavor in their kitchen. Here are two other ways lilikoi can be used.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are the staple in mainstream diets. It can be considered a comfort food. Yet, after years of the same blackberry, blueberry, or strawberry flavors, the sandwich may become a dull lunch option. This is where lilikoi steps in. It will liven up bored taste buds, and may encourage individuals to try new flavor combinations.

Another idea is to incorporate lilikoi into a gift. This makes for a unique house warming present, or it can be used to create a tropical birthday basket for that person who has it all. Simply pair this jelly with Hawaiian foods such as chocolate covered macadamia nuts. Next, throw in some coconut rum or tropical Margarita mix for an exotic and fun gift anyone will enjoy. After all, who can say no to a slice of the tropics.

Feel free to go wild with this relatively new product. Although here are not many recipes on the internet, the fun part is experimenting in the kitchen. It is sure to add a unique flavor to any dish. This fruit will make your taste buds dance, and is a great way to bring home a slice of the tropics.
