Choosing Eco Friendly Food Packaging Supplies

By Lisa Williamson

When you run a business you have to consider a lot of factors. One big issue is how environmentally friendly your business is. If you want people to know that you take this issue seriously then it is not just about the efficiency of your business but also ensuring you find the right eco friendly food packaging supplies.

Before looking for materials you need to look at what is required for your business. You may need something for transporting fruits or vegetables. In the case of someone running a restaurant or a coffee house you may wish for items that allow you to continually refill milk or coffee rather than continually reordering packets that take up resources.

One of the simplest ways to reduce this is to reduce the size of the packaging. A good recent example of this is a brand of orange drink. Recent changes of design has meant that the amount of orange drink in the bottle could be concentrated, in effect meaning that you got the same amount from a smaller bottle than a larger bottle in the previous and less efficient design.

In business terms having a smaller design can also be more cost effective in the long term. Consider the size of what you order and whether or not you could order something from someone else that is smaller. What can be a small saving at first can be a lot in the long term.

For example a company may say that they use recycled materials. The thing to look for is information specifying the amount that is recycled. Ideally you want something that is made from 100 per cent recycled materials in order to ensure that what you order is as environmentally friendly as possible.

There is also the issue of what the material is made from and where that material has been sourced from. For example more companies are using items made from sustainable sources and this is often clearly advertised on their website. This means that for every item made trees are replanted and there is always a supply of materials available in order to make more products without impacting on the local surrounding environment.

You do also need to consider things in terms of a business. For example you may produce food yourself and transport the items to businesses. Therefore you may want to look into getting compostable packaging. As well as keeping the items safe while transported there is the added benefit that the composted items can then be added to the soil and help grow produce, thereby cutting back on the amount of fertiliser you need to buy in.

In short when comparing the various environmentally friendly packaging supplies available to you it helps to do a bit of research. Looking online will make it easier for you to compare the numerous options available to your business. As with any business decision it helps to look at a number of suppliers. This is so you can gauge the quality of what they have to offer as well as compare costs in order to make the right choice to suit your business. Use your regular search engine to find suppliers in your local area and to get the best deal for your company.
