Ways To Afford Healthier Food: Buy Grass-Fed Beef

By Jaclyn Hurley

Are you one of the many people who want to eat ethically and healthfully, but are not sure how to do so? If you have budgetary restrictions, that makes this task even more difficult. If you could buy grass-fed beef wholesale, that would probably be helpful, but you may not know how or where to come across these kinds of deals.

Why does it cost more to buy meat that is hormone free and produce that is sprayed with fewer chemicals? Why should processed food be more expensive than food in its natural state? Generally, it is because large companies that mass-produce food (and are also more likely to use chemicals and unnatural processing techniques) are able to cut costs, and therefor charge less and still make a profit.

Independent farmers and small companies have to charge more, because their production costs are often higher and they still need to make a profit. If you are able to pay higher costs, it is definitely worthwhile to buy from these companies. The peace of mind you gain from knowing that your food is natural and healthful I worth the extra cost.

However, if your income is limited, and you have to stretch it in order to feed yourself and/or your family, this may seem impossible. You have to prioritize, and oftentimes mass produced food is the only kind that seems affordable. However, if you are selective and intentional, you may be able to make a few changes and still stay within your budget.

For one thing, you can pick particular food items about which you will be picky. Even if you can't afford to buy all foods in organic and natural varieties, you may be able to do this with some. For instance, you could cut down on the amount of meat you buy, and switch to hormone-free on the occasions when you do buy it. Another idea is to choose particular fruits and vegetables that you will only buy organic.

The "Dirty Dozen Plus" is a list of the fruits and vegetables you should always buy organic. It includes strawberries, hot peppers, potatoes, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, nectarines, spinach, peaches, grapes, celery, and apples. If you want to buy some items that are organic, these are the best choices.

On the other hand, it is okay to buy some conventionally grown produce. The "Clean 15" is a list of fruits and vegetables that are basically safe even when they are conventionally grown. This list includes: mushrooms, grapefruit, sweet potatoes, papayas, cantaloupe, eggplant, kiwi, mangoes, sweet peas, asparagus, avocado, cabbage, onions, pineapples, and sweet corn.

Following these lists is one way that you may be able to afford some organic foods. Another possibility is to shop at wholesale markets or co-ops, or order wholesale foods online. It is worth checking into this to see if it will save you money. Also, if you receive food stamps, you may be able to cash them in for double value coins at a farmers' market. This is definitely true in Michigan, and may be true in other states as well. Explore your options, and do the best you can!
