Try The Most Popular Latin American Cooking Recipes

Latin American food is aromatic, tasty and colorful, simple and mostly easy to prepare. They use local ingredients, and that's why you will find many differences between different local cuisines. There are several really popular Latin American cooking recipes you can try preparing in your own kitchen.

There are several types of empanadas, and one of the most popular comes from Brazil. This filled, deep fried pastry is delicious, and it is quite easy to prepare. For the dough, you need three cups of all purpose flour, salt, teaspoon of turmeric, six tablespoons butter and six tablespoons shortening, maybe one half cup beer and one egg. Mix dry ingredients, add butter and make the dough adding beer and egg. The dough needs to rest for fifteen minutes.

Now you have to prepare the filling. Saute one diced onion on two tablespoons of butter, add one can of diced palm hearts and two small diced tomatoes. After few minutes, add some Sherry and one spoon of tomato paste. When it is done, add peeled and diced shrimp, maybe one half pound. Add some salt and fresh ground pepper.

Make thin rounds of your dough and place the filling on each piece. Brush edges with egg yolk and seal them in half. You can use fork to do that. Fry empanadas in deep oil, preheated on 190 degrees. These tasty empanadas may be served hot or cold, as snacks or as a side dish.

Cuban sandwiches are highly popular, but people mostly add jalapenos and mayonnaise in them today. Traditional Cuban sandwiches don't contain such ingredients. You will need two slices of Cuban or French bread, yellow mustard, four pickle slices, four slices of ham and four slices of roast pork, and three slices of Swiss cheese. Put it in a sandwich press. You can add some butter as well.

Coconut rice is really simple recipe to try. This traditional dish is prepared quickly, and you will love it. You will need only few simple ingredients, including two cups of rice and water, one can of coconut milk, two spoons of sugar, some salt and a half cup of raisins and some coconut flakes for decoration, preferably toasted. Long grain rice is usually used for this dessert.

Cook rice in water, sugar and coconut milk. When water evaporates, cover the saucepan and cook on the lowest temperature for approximately twenty minutes. Remove from heat, add raisins, stir and cover the saucepan again. Sprinkle with toasted, crispy coconut flakes.

Churro is Latin American doughnut, sometimes called Spanish doughnut. This simple but delicious snack is cheap, easily prepared and tastes great when hot or cold. All you need is flour, salt, sugar, vegetable oil and cinnamon, and maybe fifteen minutes of your time.

Put everything but flour in a bowl and leave it to boil. Then you have to add all flour in it and stir until it forms a ball of dough. Make long strips of dough using pastry bag and deep fry them until they become golden. Drain on kitchen paper. Roll each Churro in the mixture of sugar and cinnamon.
