Ecological Effects Moroccan Olive Oil Production

By Jeannie Chapman

pasta and pizza cannot be complete without olive. If somebody will ask you on where it came from, you might think of Italy or Greece. To inform you, hundreds of years ago, there is another country that holds such great possession and they had this ever since the beginning of their civilization. The Moroccan olive oil is one of the product of Morocco that made their economy improved and made them the second supplier of olives in the world market.

Many doctors are already convinced with the nutrients brought by the olives. This is because it contains monounsaturated which does not give any risk into the human body. This is very comparable to animal fat which stays inside the body and can be risky for its chances to cause cancer.

This is also one of the reason why the export demands are getting higher. Because of the health benefits the olives posses. Morocco has already a responsibility to the world market in which they have to supply the whole world with their product. But in the near future, the country can no more do such because of the risks they have took.

Olives had been their source of financing ever since the invaders planted them in Africa. And the government still continues to encourage people to plan more olive trees. That even Greece which was the second largest supplier was defied by the Morocco. Their government and economy seems like almost relying on such exporting.

Though their economy boomed, this has a corresponding side effect to the environment and these side effects can be very fatal if left untreated. One of these is the pollution brought by the plants that process the olives into different products. Waste disposal in some plants is not well managed and not strictly observed by some agencies.

Though factories have big responsibilities when it comes to ecological issues, agriculture has also something to do with this problem. The chances of desertification of the country is getting higher and higher. As their exporting business is getting improved the soil credibility is getting lower. There is no more biological productivity due to continuous olive tree planting in which the soil cannot be able to get any other nutrients from another plants anymore.

Because of this export, many people got jobs and have fed themselves, if this will not be continued many people will be affected. This is also the reason why the government cannot really take hold on shutting down the business until they cannot find another solution to substitute olives exporting.

The purpose of this article is to let everyone be aware of what is really the situation of the suppliers these days. Though there are still no evidences of the said risks, but the chances are getting there. And once the feared effect will reach its peak, it will really affect the world market.

Moroccan olive oil may not yet be considered as extinct today. But if the suppliers will continue to grow olives without any proper soil treatment and waste management, then is afraid that the supply will be in endangered. And so we can still help them by simply not wasting it.
