Peels are sprinkled with cornmeal so that the dough slides with ease. Barbecue grills have also been used to bake the meal and in Chicago-style variants, pans are used for baking.

Crust is the name used when referring to the underside of the flatbread. Crusts vary in various variants of the flatbread. In some variants they are thin and in others they are bold. Traditionally, crusts used to be made plain, but modern day variants season them with cheese, garlic, butter, and herbs among other ingredients.

When the meal is prepared using the right ingredients in the right way, it is very healthy. However, many US restaurant chains are criticized for using unhealthy ingredients making it unhealthy. The huge amounts of salt, food energy, and fat added make this meal very unhealthy.
