The Buying Guide For The Shelf Stable Meals

By Ryan Adams

There are several reasons that convince people to store their food. However, the need to prepare for an emergency tops the reason for storing food. This goes together with the need to park extra food items when going for a picnic, fishing trip, mountain climbing or any form of adventure. On such trips, you can never be sure. There are stories of people getting lost in seas for months while others get lost in the jungles and it is only the emergency food that keeps them alive up to the time they are rescued. Shelf stable meals are specifically formulated to last long and take you through a long period when there is no fresh food supply. They also work for office lunches, seminars and other related events.

When the unthinkable happens, your only refuge is a continuous supply of water and food. It is the only way to survive many days before rescue comes knocking. This is not news to those who have found themselves in the middle of storms and earthquakes. People survive the worst of nature only to end up dying as a result of hunger.

Cleanliness is greatly required before preparing each meal. Before opening the cans or jars, it is advisable to clean it first with water before opening. Storing the goods on a shelf will surely attract some dust. Washing your hands and cooking utensils are appropriate, too. Cleanliness will surely aid in the eradication of dangerous bacteria.

However, these meals are not restricted to emergency use only. In fact, they are also ideal for office lunches, severe weather days, weekends and any other holidays. These meals are known to offer nutritious diet just minutes after preparation. They are available in store shelves with very attractive containers that are also very easy to open.

Avoid buying the food items that show signs of rust, dust, discoloration and other physical deformities. The sticky cans may also indicate signs of leakage and should also be avoided as much as possible.

Being immensely cautious to the food we buy is highly necessary. Our health lies on the meal we eat. Each one in the household must be extremely responsible. It is much better to avoid getting sick than to suffer, and the worst is to die.

If the food you are buying is canned, then you should first check the physical appearance of the tin. The cans that have been on shelves for long tends to exhibit some physical appearances like discoloration, rust, and general dullness. The rust and leaks should also be monitored when buying. Should you discover any problem after paying for an item, it can still be returned to the store for a replacement, as long as it has not been used.

Protein like lean meat, fish, or eggs should occupy one-quarter while starchy vegetables, rice or pasta take the other quarter. There are several unique ideas that can be used to come up with a good formulation including those that favor the vegetarians. Whichever the formulation, ensure that it is healthy.
